Petplan has launched a new tool that lets your vet check your cover before they start treatment

Petplan has introduced a digital tool called Cover Certainty that allows vets to instantly check whether a condition is covered by your policy, how much cover you have left, and what your excess is, all without needing to call anyone.

If you've ever sat in a vet waiting room wondering whether your insurance is going to cover what's about to happen, Petplan has launched something that could make that a lot less stressful.

What Cover Certainty does

The tool is called Cover Certainty and it works through Petplan's online veterinary portal. When you're at the vets, the practice can submit a quick request through the portal and get back a real-time confirmation of whether your pet's condition is covered by your policy. It also tells them how much cover you have remaining and what your excess is, which means your vet has the full picture before any decisions are made about treatment.

Why it could matter

That might sound like a small thing but it's actually pretty significant if you've ever been in the middle of a stressful situation with a poorly pet and had no idea where you stood financially. Around 43% of all calls to Petplan's dedicated vet line were from practices just trying to check a customer's cover status, so this clearly fills a real gap.

Available around the clock

The tool is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which matters a lot for anyone whose pet has needed emergency out-of-hours care on a weekend evening when getting hold of anyone at an insurance company is nearly impossible.

What Petplan says about claims

Petplan say they pay 98% of all claims they receive, and the Cover Certainty tool is designed to give both vets and pet owners confirmation of that financial support earlier in the process, before treatment starts rather than after.

What to do if you are with Petplan

If your pet is insured with Petplan, it's worth mentioning this to your vet next time you visit. They can access it through petplanvet.co.uk.
